The last year of Puccini's life involved great turmoil. He had nearly completed his most challenging opera — Turandot — but was dissatisfied with all of his attempts to compose the finale. He died leaving his work unfinished. Puccini's friend, Franco Alfano, followed by revisions from his publisher Ricordi and Toscanini, arrived at various versions of the finale. Other composers have tried their hands to create a finale as well, including Luciano Berio in 2001.Ron Streicher will use examples from recordings of live performances to compare these different approaches.
