As the current year draws to a close, we must acknowledge the Opera League founders, Alice Coulombe, Carol Henry and Lorraine Saunders.
As the Opera League’s first presidents, Alice and Lorraine teamed up with Carol Henry, current Chairman of LA Opera’s Board of Directors’ Executive Committee, to create the Opera League, a cadre of volunteers who helped lay the groundwork for the new opera company. It’s been stated that were it not for their vision, tenacity, steadfast volunteerism and unflagging support, LA Opera would never have become the opera company it is today. Forty-three years later, the League remains strong to its founders’ beliefs.
To honor them, the Opera League has created the Founders Legacy Initiative as our year-end fundraising campaign. This Initiative will help underwrite our programs, most specifically, the pre-performance lectures which reach nearly 40,000 operagoers every year. The lectures will be presented as:
