The President and the Picnic

Have you seen the Event Manager?

Our annual Hollywood Bowl picnic is approaching faster than you can say "bouncing Tosca!"

On Sunday, July 24, your fellow Opera Leaguers and friends will convene in our very own private picnic area just outside the Bowl and devour sandwiches and salads and chase them down with a glass or three of the red and / or the white. Then we will march up to our seats and marvel at the marvelous Gustavo Dudamel conducting a performance featuring the rapidly up-and-coming Julianna Di Giacomo as Floria Tosca. Incidentally, Ms. Di Giacomo is a native of Santa Monica, so come on out and support the home team. Feasting kicks off at 5pm, and the show starts at 7:30pm. Click here to order tickets. And if you haven't read Bob Bernard's hilarious and insightful piece on the bouncing Toscas ("A Leap of Faith"), do yourself a favor and click here.

You’ll’ve barely digested the Hollywood Bowl picnic when it’ll be time for our annual pilgrimage to the Land of Enchantment for the Santa Fe Opera Festival. With operas by Puccini, Mozart, Gounod, Strauss, and Barber, it promises to be another spectacular week. Unfortunately, as of this writing, the trip has already sold out. However, please visit Music for the Eyes, the blog run by League board member Brita Millard, who organizes these amazing experiences. Her blog will give you a sense of what the Santa Fe trip is all about and if it's something you'd like to be part of the next time we offer it. Feel free to reach out to her through the blog for more information.

The volunteer signup window is now wide open for Educator and Student programs. The Opera League's Education team of devoted volunteers maintains a longstanding rock-solid relationship with LA Opera's Education and Community Engagement team (EduCom). EduCom is a tiny but mighty team who simply could not fulfill their remit without us. Would you like to be the one standing up there at the library or community center delivering a talk on the finer points of your favorite opera or composer? Click here to visit our new page on operaleague.org that delves in depth about everything you need to know about volunteering for these programs. And while you're there, why not sign up?

At this point in my update, I hope you followed my advice in the first paragraph and ordered your tickets to the Hollywood Bowl picnic. Did you notice anything different compared to the last time you ordered tickets on operaleague.org? That's right, we've bagged that old clunky shopping cart and replaced it with a spiffy new tool called Event Manager. This also replaces the site's old calendar (available along the top red bar). Event Manager will make ordering tickets super simple, and that new calendar is the generous helping of gravy that lets you peruse events month by month and order tickets right from the calendar detail page.

The 2016-17 season promises to be action packed (what else is new?). You’ll find out more in the fall 2016 BRAVO due to land in your inboxes in mid to late August. For now, save these two dates: September 11 for the Macbeth seminar and October 30 for the seminar on Philip Glass’s Akhnaten. You definitely won’t want to miss these.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, I hope it’s the kind that deserves on encore.

Until next time,

Marlene
