The Opera League is thrilled to present its first in-person seminar since February 2020! One of our favorite speakers, Simon Williams, Emeritus Professor of Theater and Dance at UC Santa Barbara, will be back to discuss Verdi's Il Trovatore.
During his lifetime, Il Trovatore was Verdi's most successful opera, both in Italy and internationally. Professor Williams will explore the reasons why this was so, but also why critics, over time, developed reservations about the work. In recent years, however, Il Trovatore has increased in popularity and is now, once again, among the most frequently performed of all of Verdi's works.
Professor Williams sees Il Trovatore as the most thoroughly tragic of all Verdi's operas and yet, at the same time, it is one of the liveliest and most enjoyable works he wrote. Professor Williams will explain how this is so. He will also relate it to Rigoletto and La Traviata and illustrate his talk with musical examples.
Participating singers will be announced soon.
Food will be available for purchase from the Colburn Cafe.
