A
Brief History
The Opera League of Los Angeles was
founded in 1982 by Lorraine Saunders and Alice Coulombe to support opera in Southern California. "Our mission was really to
get the word out about opera," according to Saunders. "It was meant
to be an organization where people who really loved the art form could be
part of it."
When the Royal Opera Covent Garden came in
1984 for the Olympic Arts Festival, League members made the visiting artists
feel welcome by taking them shopping and sightseeing.
With the founding of LA Opera a year
later, the all-volunteer League became the company's principal volunteer
support group.
The League combines service to LA Opera
with educational and social events focused on opera. Its aim is not only to
assist the opera company but to bring new people to opera, offer informative
programs about opera and provide opportunities for opera lovers to form
friendships.

African Americans for Los
Angeles Opera
A Chapter of the Opera League of Los
Angeles
African Americans for Los Angeles Opera (AALAO)
help to diversify the opera audience by attracting more participants from the
African American Community. In addition to all League membership benefits,
AALAO members receive invitations to receptions and recitals featuring
African American singers.
